Adults giraffes are not typically attacked by lions, leopards, or hyenas. However, their newborns are common prey. Only a quarter of all newborn giraffes survive. The mother giraffe kicks her feeble newborn so that it can begin standing on its own feet. Once the newborn can stand, it is able to run with the pack to escape danger.
